What our reading volunteers say...
Our latest wonderful group of reading volunteers have completed their training and are ready to get started with their new roles within the school. As part of their training they met with an existing volunteer, and when we saw what she thinks about being a reading volunteer we just had to share!
"I am delighted to be a reading volunteer at Epping Primary School.
Working closely alongside the year teachers; as a volunteer I can support readers in each class.
Together with each child, we have the time to discuss their book, story, characters and anything else that catches their attention in detail.
Each child has the opportunity to read/discuss and expand their reading knowledge with me on a weekly 1:1 basis.
The children have recognised that this is their own, individual time slot with a focused and dedicated adult in their schooling day.
With a reading volunteer, the child also has an opportunity to develop a variety of skills to scaffold their learning.
We could use dictionaries to look up familiar words or look at maps around the classroom to see where a country is.
It is not about the quantity of pages that the child reads with me but the understanding of what they’ve read which is key.
In conclusion, it is rewarding to build up a partnership with the children and teachers and to be a volunteer in Epping Primary School’s successful reading scheme."
Our goal is to have a reading volunteer for every class, if you would be interested in joining our group please let the School Office know and they will let you know when the next training is planned!
