Mathematical Vocabulary
We recognise the importance of language in developing mathematical understanding.
Prior to each unit of work, key mathematical vocabulary is identified and explicitly taught. Vocabulary and terminology are displayed as part of our mathematics learning environment so that pupils can refer to key language throughout a unit. Teachers regularly revisit this vocabulary within lessons, modelling its correct use and encouraging pupils to apply precise mathematical language when explaining their thinking.
Our Mathematics Vocabulary Cover Sheets are used to support this process, ensuring that key terminology is introduced, displayed, revisited and embedded over time. This helps pupils to acquire secure mathematical language and use it confidently when reasoning, problem-solving and discussing mathematical ideas.
