Challenge and Greater Depth
Challenge in mathematics is not simply about moving on to more difficult content; it is about developing a deeper understanding of the mathematics being taught.
Higher-attaining mathematicians are encouraged to:
- Solve routine and non-routine problems
- Explore open-ended investigations
- Explain and justify their reasoning
- Make mathematical generalisations
- Apply mathematical knowledge in unfamiliar contexts
- Explore multiple methods and representations
These opportunities encourage pupils to think deeply, make connections and develop sophisticated mathematical reasoning skills.
