Challenge in mathematics is not simply about moving on to more difficult content; it is about developing a deeper understanding of the mathematics being taught. 

Higher-attaining mathematicians are encouraged to: 

  • Solve routine and non-routine problems 
  • Explore open-ended investigations 
  • Explain and justify their reasoning 
  • Make mathematical generalisations 
  • Apply mathematical knowledge in unfamiliar contexts 
  • Explore multiple methods and representations 

These opportunities encourage pupils to think deeply, make connections and develop sophisticated mathematical reasoning skills.
